REINFORCED GLASS TECHNOLOGY

Glass-based materials are not strange to our daily lives. In addition to being widely used as kitchenware, glass materials are also used as structural materials such as house windows, doors, walls, mirrors and so on. However, the use of such glass is not a new thing nor is the main thing that to be highlighted here.

The new thing is that the development of mobile electronic devices such as phones, tablets and laptops requires light glass and is reinforced as a screen. To this day, continuous research is conducted to produce glass that is not scratched or does not break when the device falls to the floor, ground or risky surfaces. According to a survey, screen performance against scratch and drop resistance is the second factor by users in choosing the type of device.

Glass researchers have developed various glass formulations, and heat treatment methods to produce strong and light glass. Among the famous screen manufacturers is Corning with the product is Gorilla Glass. With Corning's latest product, Gorilla Glass Victus, it can save the screen if it falls to a height of 2 meters. The best performance compared to aluminosilicate glass which is a safe height of 0.8 meters.

This achievement would not have been possible without in-depth study in the field of material technology. At the Faculty of Bioengineering and Technology, various studies are conducted in this field. Reinforced glass technology such as ion exchange technology is the focus method, but this technology needs to be refined taking into account large-scale production.
