Handover of the Mini Hydro Turbine Project to the Orang Asli Community

Date: 22nd February – 23rd February 2025
Location: Kampung Redig Pos Hau, Gua Musang
Community: Orang Asli

The mini hydro turbine project, which began two years ago, was completed on 22nd February 2025, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between the Faculty of Bioengineering and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), the Society of Petroleum Engineering Kuala Lumpur Section (SPEKL), and the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). The primary aim of this project was to provide a sustainable, renewable energy solution to the Orang Asli community in Kampung Redig Pos Hau, Gua Musang, to improve their access to electricity and enhance their living standards.

On 22nd February, the installation of the mini hydro turbine was successfully completed, with the participation of the local community, who were actively involved in the setup process. Following the completion, on 23rd February, the project was officially handed over to the Orang Asli community. During the handover, the project team provided an educational session on the system’s functionality, benefits, and maintenance requirements. The community members were trained on how to operate and maintain the turbine, ensuring that they would be able to manage and sustain the system independently moving forward.

With the project now handed over, the team will continue to monitor the system’s performance and provide ongoing support as needed. This two-year initiative has not only provided the Orang Asli community with a reliable and sustainable energy source but has also fostered valuable skills and knowledge within the community. The collaboration between UMK, SPEKL, and JAKOA exemplifies a successful partnership in addressing energy access issues in remote communities and will serve as a model for future renewable energy projects.
