Functional and Sustainable Nanomaterials Research Group

Background

Introduction

The Functional and Sustainable Nanomaterials (FOSIL) research group is dedicated to advancing the design and application of nanomaterials that address critical global challenges in electronics, health, and the environment. Motivated by the urgent need for greener, more efficient materials, the group pioneers interdisciplinary approaches that combine materials science, chemistry, and engineering to develop solutions with real-world impact. With a strong foundation in interdisciplinary research, the group develops nanophotocatalysts, nanomembranes, and nanoabsorbents aimed at addressing pressing issues such as water purification, energy efficiency, and targeted drug delivery. Their work contributes significantly to the university's research standing, fostering collaborations with industry and engaging in community-focused projects that highlight the practical applications of nanotechnology in building a cleaner, healthier future.

Research Focus

Core Research Themes

The core of FOSIL RG is based on both the synthesis and  application of nanomaterials in:

  • Green synthesis
  • Nanoelectronics
  • Nanomedicine
  • Nano-photocatalyst, nano-membrane and nano-absorbent

Research Objectives

  • To synthesise metal oxide nanoparticles using plant extracts through a bio-inspired green synthesis approach.
  • To develop high-performance nanoelectronics using 2D nanomaterials
  • To design and synthesise nanocomposite materials with tailored physical, chemical, biological, and functional properties for biomedical applications.
  • To develop sustainable green nanomaterials (1D dan 2D) alternatives for water remediation.

Research Impacts

  • This research group is aligned with Malaysia's National Nanotechnology Policy 2021–2030 and the Green Technology Master Plan 2017–2030. Advancing sustainable development through the eco-friendly synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles utilizing local plant extracts, which not only promotes environmentally sustainable practices but also offers cost-effective alternatives. The focus on high-performance nanoelectronics through the integration of 2D materials significantly enhances the capacity of the nation's digital and semiconductor sectors. The creation of customized nanocomposites designed for biomedical applications aims to foster innovation within the national healthcare system. In addition, the efforts to create 1D and 2D green nanomaterials for water remediation are strategically addressing urgent environmental challenges and community health concerns. These initiatives will establish Malaysia as a regional leader in sustainable nanotechnology, thereby facilitating the country's transition to a circular economy. This research also enhances technological resilience and ultimately contributes to the improved quality of life for its citizens.
